St. Luke’s Theatre Information
St. Luke’s Theatre, part of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, rests a few blocks away from Broadway and presents an elegant theater space and a small stage. The stage, despite its size, still manages to have three wings and features a tan colored woodwork design that provides a pleasing contrast with the plum walls and the sconce lighting. It’s a venue that doesn’t try to match the bigger Broadway houses, instead of focusing on intimacy, comfort, and care.
But given its unique position inside of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, you can’t talk about the venue without talking about the church itself.
The church, also known as The German Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Saint Luke’s, is a historic Lutheran church located on Restaurant Row at 308 West 46th Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues in Manhattan’s world-famous Theater District. The church was founded in 1850 as a Dutch Reformed congregation that first met in rented rooms on the third floor of a building on 35th Street and 9th Avenue. The congregation reorganized as a Lutheran congregation in 1853. The group moved several times over the years, from a building on 43rd Street in 1863 to a building on 42nd Street in 1875, before finally acquiring property at West 46th Street. The cornerstone of the building that would become their current location was laid in October 1922 and the church dedicated September of the following year.
While the congregation was an independent organization, it formally joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1987. St. Luke’s Theatre, would later be built and placed on the church’s premises to provide a comfortable and relaxing venue for live shows, musicals, plays, and performances that don’t require the flair of larger Broadway venues.
